Fifteen

My heart’s still pounding when I get back to headquarters. It was probably nothing. It’s not like bad guys usually drive minivans, right? I mean, if I was up to something I’d drive something else. Or maybe I’d want to blend in, so a minivan would be a great cover. Man, if I keep going down this conspiracy theorist road, I’m going to drive myself insane.

I shake out my arms. I can’t really tell anyone what happened. I wasn’t even supposed to be there. So I’m going to take Mr. Smith’s advice and go grab some food, and we’ll blame my shakiness on needing sugar. I head for the cafeteria, hoping since it’s an odd time, no one will be there.

I walk inside and see that Dex is here, loading up a plate at the salad bar. I guess if I’m going to run into anyone, I don’t mind it being him. After the last time with Mike almost crying and everyone staring at me, I’ve been avoiding everyone. “Hey, Dex,” I call out, my voice a little higher than it should be. Hopefully he won’t notice.

He turns around, a smile on his face, and waves at me. I grab a plate and join him at the buffet. “How’s it going, Becca?” he asks.

“Going fine,” I tell him, and I hope I’ve got a great poker face. Because things aren’t fine. At least I’m not diving under a table, but I’m so on edge that I’m afraid I’ll get an ulcer. I want to tell him what’s going on. I want to warn him, but for now I’ll load my plate and sit down to eat with Dex.

“I feel like I’m always running into you when I think no one else is going to be around,” I say, and he chuckles.

We walk to the closest table and sit across from one another, digging into our food. “I was so busy at the lab that when I looked up I saw that I missed lunch.”

“Does that happen a lot?” I ask after I swallow the bite in my mouth.

His cheeks redden and he adjusts the glasses on his face. “I can’t help it. I just get in this zone where I have to figure out everything a mineral can do, and what I can do to it so it’s more.”

I’m jealous. He’s doing things that are going to change the world. And at times I feel like, what am I bringing to the table?

He abruptly stops mid-bite. “Oh, I’ve been looking up that thing we talked about. Apparently there’s a stone called carnelian. Supposedly it can block mind reading. If we can get our hands on some, I can see if it’ll work.” His voice is super animated, and he’s waving his hands around, and I’m watching his fork, which is loaded with food.

“That’s awesome. Where can we get it?” I ask, and I breathe a sigh of relief when he puts the fork in his mouth.

“Actually it’s from Brazil, but I’m pretty sure I can just order it online.
